A ticket for Lazy River Penarungan costs Rp35,000 (about US$2) per person and includes a helmet, life jacket, locker and a pickup ride to the start point, according to detikBali's report of 5 July 2026. The route runs about 1.5 km along a subak irrigation canal in Penarungan village, Mengwi district, Badung, and it is open 09.00-17.00 Bali time.
The canal is about 3 metres wide and 1 metre deep on average. You drift with the current and paddle now and then to avoid the banks and trees. The operator says it has run since 2018, and the Badung regency's official tourism site (SITA Badung) lists it as a water attraction in the Penarungan tourism village, with shallow spots that are safe for a swim.
Morning route from Denpasar
- 08.20 leave Denpasar. It is about 17 km or 40 minutes by car according to detikBali. From Canggu or Ubud, check the drive time on Maps since traffic varies.
- 09.00 arrive as the ticket counter opens. Leave your things in a locker and put on a helmet and life jacket.
- 09.15 ride the pickup to the start and get in the water. The detikBali reporter took about 30 minutes to finish.
- 10.00 change (there are five changing rooms and two toilets), then sit at the warung beside the canal. Coffee is about Rp5,000 and a cup of instant noodles Rp9,000 as of July 2026.
- Afterwards you can continue to Pura Taman Ayun, also in Mengwi district; see our Pura Taman Ayun guide. The red-brick Pura Sada Kapal is in the same district too.
What to know before you go
- The current is calm. There is only one rapid, and detikBali found it short on thrills. For more adrenaline, big-river rafting or Tukad Jinah tubing in Klungkung is a better fit.
- Expect to get wet and scraped. Boats sometimes bump into the cliff walls and trees, and water dripping off the cliffs can soak you.
- No guide on the water. Staff watch the spots where boats tend to flip, but you steer yourself on the way down. Ask the operator about age limits for children before paying.
- Phones: waterproof pouches rent for Rp15,000.
- Rainy season: from November the water level can rise after heavy rain. Ask about conditions on the day before you set off.
