Tropical wine from Bali? That is exactly what Hatten Wines set out to prove. The island’s first winery was founded in 1994 by Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa, from a Sanur family that has been making arak and Balinese rice wine since 1968. The grapes grow in Buleleng, North Bali, and are vinified in Sanur. The easiest place to taste them is The Cellardoor, Hatten’s education centre and wine boutique at Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai No. 393.
Why Balinese Wine Is Different
- Bali sits roughly 8° south of the equator, so the vines stay evergreen and yield three vintages a year.
- The vineyards around Sanggalangit (Gerokgak) and Seririt in Buleleng grow heritage varieties such as Alphonse Lavallée and Belgia alongside international grapes like Muscat St. Vallier and Syrah.
- The first release (1994) was a rosé from Alphonse Lavallée; today the range covers about 10 labels, and Hatten was named Asian Winery of the Year in 2017.
What You Taste at The Cellardoor
- Aga White (light and fresh), Aga Red and Aga Rosé.
- Alexandria — a floral sweet Muscat, a favourite with beginners.
- Tunjung (traditional-method white sparkling) and Jepun (sparkling rosé), named after the water lily and the frangipani.
- Pino de Bali — a sweet fortified wine that works as a digestif.
- Tasting programmes (Bali Wine, Sweet Lover, and a Comparative flight with Two Islands wines) cost around IDR 200k per person; wine & cheese pairing is around IDR 280k. Prices may change — confirm on arrival.
