Palasari Church & Palasari Dam: West Bali's Hidden Gem in Jembrana

Most travellers stop in Gilimanuk only to catch the ferry to Java. Yet 20 minutes inland, in Ekasari Village, Jembrana, stands one of Bali's most unexpected buildings: the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church of Palasari — a Gothic-style church with a soaring tower, but fronted by a Balinese gate and traditional carvings. Nearby, Palasari Dam spreads out quietly amid the forest. Together they make Palasari a West Bali hidden gem that rarely appears on group itineraries.

A Catholic Village Carved Out of the Forest

The story begins around 1940, when Father Simon Buis, SVD led Catholic families from Tuka and Gumbrih to clear nutmeg forest at the foot of the Jembrana hills. The King of Jembrana granted land to the pioneers, and the new settlement was named Palasari. The church you see today was built around 1956 and completed in 1958; it is now listed as a cultural heritage site. Palasari is also known as a “village of vocations” for the many priests, sisters and brothers it has produced.

What Makes It Special

  • Hybrid architecture: European Gothic arches meet Balinese gates, statues and carved ornament — the interior is cool and airy.
  • The iconic tower rising above the treeline, the favourite photo subject from the forecourt.
  • Palasari Dam about 5–10 minutes' drive away: a broad reservoir for fishing, cycling, easy trekking, or simply sitting by the water.
  • Quiet: outside Sundays and Christmas you often share the place only with villagers.

Visiting Etiquette

The church is still in active use. Do not enter or take photos during Mass, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), silence your phone and keep your voice low. There is no entrance fee; a donation box is available and well worth contributing to for the building's upkeep.
