Sumampan Waterfall, Gianyar: The Carved-Stone Hidden Falls of Kemenuh Village

If Tegenungan feels too busy for your taste, its neighbour is far calmer. Sumampan Waterfall sits in Kemenuh village, Sukawati district, Gianyar — a short tiered fall dropping into a small pool, framed by stone walls carved with reliefs by local artisans. Those carvings are what set Sumampan apart: a photo backdrop you will not find at any other Bali waterfall, and no long queue.

Access & The Descent

  • From Ubud: about 30 minutes by road (roughly 12 km) via the Goa Gajah–Sukawati route.
  • From Denpasar: about 45 minutes; from Sanur about 50 minutes.
  • Small roadside parking in the village, around IDR 2,000–5,000.
  • From the car park there is a footpath and a descending stairway of about 5–10 minutes. Going down is easy; the climb back is what leaves you breathless — take it slowly.
  • Entry costs around IDR 10,000–20,000 per person, managed by local residents.

Best Time & What to Bring

Come in the morning, roughly 8:00–10:30 am. That is when sunlight starts reaching into the valley gap, bouncing off the water and lighting up the stone reliefs — far more dramatic than the flat light at midday. Morning also means you may have the pool to yourself.

  • Non-slip footwear is essential: hiking sandals or water shoes. The rocks around the pool are mossy and very slippery.
  • Bring a small towel, a change of clothes, and a dry bag for your phone — the spray is heavy.
  • The pool is shallow and narrow; it suits a short dip rather than serious swimming.

Rainy Season Tips & Combining Routes

In the rainy season (November–March) the flow is far stronger and the stairway can become very slippery and muddy. Avoid arriving right after heavy rain, and cancel your plan if the water looks murky brown. Because they sit close together, Sumampan pairs well in one morning with Tegenungan Waterfall (about 10 minutes away) and Kanto Lampo Waterfall (about 20 minutes) — do Sumampan first while it is still quiet.
