Pandan Beach on Nusa Penida has no road. The only way in is a 20-30 minute walk over the headland from the southern end of Crystal Bay, roughly 1 km each way with about 60 metres of climbing. The beach itself is free (as of a January 2026 update), but you still pass through the Crystal Bay gate, which since 12 August 2026 charges Rp25,000 per adult and Rp15,000 per child, paid cashless.
What you get in return is a small white-sand cove that usually holds a handful of people, while Crystal Bay next door can have more than a hundred. The route below starts from Sanur and uses realistic times.
A Day Route from Sanur
- 07:30 Fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida, about 40-45 minutes. Land at Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh and pick up a rented scooter or a pre-booked driver.
- 08:45 Ride to Crystal Bay in Sakti village, around 30 minutes from the harbour. The road is paved, with some narrow, steep stretches.
- 09:15 Pay at the Crystal Bay gate, park, and walk to the far left (south) end of the beach. The trail up the hill starts there, among the trees.
- 09:20-09:50 Climb and descend to Pandan. Part of the path is steep concrete steps, the rest is dirt. There is almost no shade, so starting before 10:00 makes a real difference.
- 09:50-11:30 Swim and rest. One small stall near the beach entrance sells drinks, but do not count on it for food.
- 11:30 Walk back the same way and have lunch at the Crystal Bay warungs before moving on or catching an afternoon boat.
Want the sunset? Pandan faces west, so it is a good one. The catch is that the walk back over the hill will be dark. Bring a head torch and head up as soon as the sun drops.
Before You Swim
The cove is fairly sheltered, but there is no lifeguard. The water off Nusa Penida's west coast is known for strong currents beyond the bays, so stay inside the cove and do not swim out into open water. The seabed has chunks of coral, so water shoes help. For longer snorkelling sessions, Crystal Bay next door has gear rental, while Gamat Bay to the north is usually reached by boat.
The Honest Downsides
The beach is small, and several travel writers have noted washed-up rubbish collecting in its corners. The trail is hot at midday and not a good idea for weak knees, small children who cannot walk far, or wheelchairs. If you only have one day on Nusa Penida and want to see Kelingking and Broken Beach, Pandan will eat two to three hours that may be better spent elsewhere.
Costs, Location and What to Bring
- Crystal Bay ticket: Rp25,000 adult, Rp15,000 child, cashless, in force since 12 August 2026 (checked October 2026). Foreign visitors also pay a separate island entry levy; details are in our budget guide to Nusa Penida.
- Pandan Beach: no ticket as of January 2026. 2023 reviews put scooter parking and the Crystal Bay toilets at around Rp5,000 each; these may have changed.
- Location: View on Google Maps
- Recent visitor photos: search on Instagram
- Bring: at least 1 litre of water per person, shoes with grip, a hat, and small cash for the drinks stall.
One last tip: check your return boat time before heading to Pandan, because the walk there and back plus the ride to the harbour takes about an hour and a half.
