Melukat at Pura Griya Sakti Manuaba: The Quiet Alternative to Tirta Empul

If Tirta Empul feels too crowded for your first spiritual experience in Bali, drive about 25 minutes north of Ubud to Banjar Manuaba in Kenderan village, Tegallalang. There stands Pura Griya Sakti Manuaba, a spring temple founded in the 17th century by a high priest descended from Danghyang Nirartha — and, more to the point, a melukat site that is usually almost empty.

How It Differs from Tirta Empul

• No long queues; often just one or two Balinese families praying.
• No official ticket counter — what applies here is punia, a voluntary donation.
• Rituals are led by the local pemangku (temple priest), not by scheduled tourist sessions.
• The setting is shaded and cool: the temple sits between two rivers, with a huge tree behind the main shrine.

Melukat for Beginners

• Dress: a sarong (kamen) and sash are compulsory. Bring a change of clothes, a small towel and a shirt that is not see-through when wet.
• Restrictions: menstruating women may not enter the temple grounds, nor may anyone in mourning after a death in the family.
• Order: offer canang and pray first, then go down to the spouts. The lowest spout is for bathing; the ones above it are reserved for collecting holy water, not for washing.
• Best time: 07:00–09:00, when the water is freshest and the temple at its quietest. Avoid arriving during the piodalan anniversary (every 210 days) unless you are invited.
• Allow 45–60 minutes, and never photograph someone mid-ritual without asking.
