Makepung is a traditional buffalo chariot race unique to Jembrana Regency in West Bali, something you won't find in the tourist areas of South Bali. A pair of decorated water buffalo pull a small chariot (cikar) driven by a jockey, racing across dry rice-field tracks. Originally born from farmers' habits while working the fields, Makepung has grown into a lively cultural spectacle that locals take great pride in.
When and Where
Makepung is generally held in the dry season, roughly between July and November, when the fields have been harvested and the ground is dry. It takes place on circuits in rice-field areas around Negara and villages in Jembrana. There are local group races as well as prestigious events such as the regent's or governor's cup.
- The buffalo are decorated with crowns, bell necklaces, and colorful cloth.
- Jockeys spur the buffalo to high speeds along the track.
- The atmosphere is filled with gamelan music and cheering crowds.

The event is generally free or donation-based and open to the public. Since the schedule changes each season, it's best to confirm dates with local sources.
- Come in the morning when the air is cool and the races begin.
