Off the coast of Candidasa in Karangasem, three rocky outcrops rise from the Lombok Strait: Gili Tepekong, Gili Mimpang, and Gili Biaha — East Bali’s most demanding and most rewarding dive sites, with ripping currents, water that turns cold without warning, and the chance to meet mola-mola and white tip reef sharks.
The Canyon and What Lives Below
- Gili Tepekong (10–40 m) — black basalt boulders carpeted in soft coral; The Canyon, a narrow crack starting at 25 m, is only opened when the sea is genuinely calm.
- Gili Mimpang (10–35 m) — known as “Batu Tiga”; white tip reef sharks, turtles, and napoleon wrasse show up regularly.
- Mola-mola from July to October, most often around the full or new moon, alongside giant trevally, barracuda, frogfish, and octopus.
Why This Is Not a Beginner Site
- Currents shift direction and can pull you down (downcurrent) — this is no place to learn to dive.
- Standard requirement: Advanced Open Water plus 20–25 logged dives, with your last dive no more than six months ago.
- Water runs 19–28°C and cold thermoclines are common in the dry season — wear a 5 mm wetsuit and carry an SMB and dive computer.
- Follow the briefing, stay close to your guide, and call the dive if surface conditions deteriorate.
Operators, Prices, and Best Season
- Established Candidasa operators: Gangga Divers (a PADI 5-star Eco Dive Center on the beach at Lotus Bungalows), Bali Bubbles Dive Center, and Sianmay Candidasa Diving.
- A two-dive trip runs about US$85–95, roughly Rp1.4–1.6 million per person (boat, guide, tanks, weights); full equipment rental is around Rp400,000.
- A jukung or speedboat from Candidasa or Buitan beach takes only 10–20 minutes; from Padangbai it is about 30 minutes.
- Best season is April to November. Snorkelling at Mimpang is possible only when currents are gentle, at around US$45 per person.
