On the way to Pantai Tanah Barak in Kutuh village, South Kuta, the asphalt suddenly sinks between two white limestone walls tens of metres high. The narrow canyon is not entirely natural: it is a former Kutuh paras stone quarry later opened up as beach access. The result is a dramatic corridor that has become one of South Bali's most sought-after photo spots, just minutes from Pandawa Beach.
What makes this canyon special
- Cream-white limestone walls streaked with vertical lines left by excavation machinery.
- A sharp contrast between dark asphalt, bright cliffs and the blue sea at the end of the corridor.
- The road ends at a white-sand beach that is far quieter than Pandawa.
Route and access
Allow about 45 minutes from Kuta, an hour from Seminyak and 1.5–2 hours from Ubud. Follow the road toward Pandawa Beach through the Melasti–Kutuh area, then take the turn-off toward Tanah Barak before the Pandawa descent. The road is smooth and car-friendly, but it is still two-way and actively used by vehicles. A fee is collected at the entry post. The site was temporarily closed after a cliff landslide in early 2024, so check current conditions before you go.
Best time, what to bring and safety
- Between 7am and 9am you get soft light, an empty road and no fierce glare bouncing off the white walls.
- Bring water, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; there is almost no shade along the corridor.
- Wear comfortable footwear — sand, loose stones and a fairly long descent to the beach.
- Shoot from the roadside rather than the middle, and watch for falling rock near the walls.
- Never carve or write on the limestone; the surface is soft and the damage is permanent.
