A few kilometres south of central Ubud, in Mas village (Jalan Tegal Bingin, Kemenuh, Gianyar), hides one of Bali’s most impressive museums — and admission is free. Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets holds more than 1,200 masks and thousands of wayang puppets from across Indonesia and Asia, displayed inside a row of antique Javanese joglo pavilions rebuilt on wide lawned grounds.
What You Will See
- Masks of the archipelago: Balinese masks (Rangda, Barong, Sidakarya), Javanese masks, Kalimantan hudoq masks, even Papuan pieces — grouped by region so comparisons are easy.
- Puppets across Asia: Javanese and Balinese wayang kulit and wayang golek, plus puppets from China, India, Japan, Thailand and Europe.
- Joglo architecture: genuine old Javanese teak buildings — as interesting as the collection they house.
- Gardens & rice fields: paths between the pavilions pass ponds and old trees; calm, shaded, and almost never busy.
Visiting Tips
- Allow 1–1.5 hours; the grounds are larger than most people expect.
- Wear shoes that slip off easily — you will step in and out of several joglo.
- Combine it with Mas village itself, Bali’s woodcarving heartland, or stop by on the Ubud–Sanur/Denpasar drive.
- Since it is free, drop something in the donation box — that is what keeps this collection maintained.
