Sambel Bejek Belayu, Tabanan: Price, Hours and When It Sells Out

A set of rice with sambel bejek at Warung Sambel Bejek Belayu in Marga, Tabanan, costs about Rp20-25k including a drink, and the warung only opens from morning to midday. The owner, Nyoman Winten, told RRI that the warung closes at 14.00 whether the food is gone or not. More recent visitor reviews record shorter hours, around 08.45-13.00 on weekdays and an earlier close at weekends (checked September 2026).

What you get

There has been a single menu since 1978. The sambel bejek is thinly sliced torch-ginger flower (kecombrang), shredded chicken, raw shallots, chilli, a squeeze of lime and coconut oil, kneaded by hand (bejek) in a big stone mortar. The rice comes with pepes, a clear chicken broth and fried chicken skin. According to RRI, the owner slices 70-100 torch-ginger buds every day just before serving, and around 150-200 portions go before noon.

Honest verdict

It tastes fresh, sour and hot, with a strong torch-ginger perfume. That is exactly what splits opinion: some reviews say the flower overpowers everything, the chicken portion is small and the broth is flat. The building is semi-permanent with simple seating, and at lunchtime you may have to wait for a free seat. If you dislike sharp floral flavours, this place may disappoint.

Belayu is on the way to Pengempu Waterfall in Cau Belayu and Alas Kedaton, so eating here before a morning outing makes more sense than chasing it after midday.
