Pura Taman Pule Mas: Kuningan Odalan, Donation & Entry Rules

Pura Taman Pule does not sell tickets. You leave a voluntary donation, wear a sarong and sash, and ask the temple priest before going further inside. The temple sits in the middle of Mas village, about 5 km south of central Ubud, and comes alive during its Tumpek Kuningan odalan. The next one falls on Saturday 23 January 2027 (checked on kalenderbali.org, September 2026).

What is the link with Danghyang Nirartha?

According to the temple's deputy head speaking to Bali Express (2020), Ki Bendesa Mas invited the priest Danghyang Nirartha to live in Mas. Nirartha taught Siwa Sidhanta in the Bendesa's garden, married his daughter and founded a shrine called Pura Pule. Because a garden lay to its east, the name became Taman Pule. The temple is said to have been consecrated on Saniscara Kliwon Kuningan in Saka 1411 (1489 AD). Descendants of the Pasek Bendesa Mas and Brahmana Mas lineages therefore treat it as an ancestral temple. The story also explains why Mas village is seen as the home of carvers of Brahmana descent.

When is the odalan, and how long does it last?

The peak is Tumpek Kuningan, 10 days after Galungan, repeating every 210 days. The previous ones fell on 29 November 2025 and 27 June 2026. Sources differ on the length: Bali Post mentions the closing rite on Monday, while the Desa Wisata Mas listing on Jadesta asks visitors to wear temple dress from Friday to Tuesday. Plan for 3-5 days with the peak on Saturday. The background to the holiday is in our Galungan and Kuningan article.

What can you watch during the odalan?

The highlight is the masked Wayang Wong Ramayana, a sacred dance performed here only during the odalan. It now runs twice: the day before the peak and on the peak day. The deities are also carried in procession about 500 m to Pura Buk Jambe and back. We found no news source confirming a night market or fairground rides. Residents' videos only show vendors around the temple at night, so do not come just for that.

Can tourists go in on an ordinary day?

You can visit the outer yard, but the inner gates are often locked outside ceremonies. That is the main drawback: without an odalan you may only see the carved gateway and the spring pool from outside. During the odalan the courtyard fills with worshippers (hundreds on Kuningan morning in 2021, according to Bali Portal News), so watch from the edges and avoid photographing people's faces while they pray. Menstruating women may not enter, in line with general temple etiquette in Bali.
