Pura Pucak Bukit Sinunggal in Tajun village, Kubutambahan district, stands on a hill at about 650 metres above sea level and is reached by roughly 200 metres of stone steps, a 10-15 minute walk. No official ticket is recorded; bring small notes for a donation (checked September 2026). This Dang Kahyangan temple appears in an inscription of Sri Kesari Warmadewa dated 914 AD, and people in Buleleng call it the Besakih of Buleleng because its shrines follow Besakih's layout.
What you get
The inner courtyard holds a seven-tiered meru with a Ganesha statue, shaded by a large tree that keeps it cool even at midday. The road to Tajun is paved with hotmix asphalt and signposted, according to a 2023 study in Jurnal Penelitian Agama Hindu.
A bonus few mention: Pura Paninjoan in the same area, about 150 steps up from Pura Tampul Lawang, looks out over the coast and sea of north Bali (tatkala.co).
The downsides
This is a working temple, not a photo spot. The same 2023 study notes that some members of the customary village still object to the temple being treated as a tourist site on grounds of sanctity. If you are not there to pray, stay in the outer courtyard and don't enter the inner sanctum without the priest's permission.
Parking holds only about 20 small cars and 100 motorbikes. During the piodalan on Purnama Kapat, which usually falls around October, thousands of worshippers come over seven days and buses park on the verge. There is no information centre, and no hotel or homestay in Tajun; the nearest stays are 10-15 km away.
Before you climb
- Location: View on Google Maps
- Dress: sarong and sash required; women who are menstruating do not enter the temple grounds, per the general rule at Balinese temples.
- Timing: an ordinary morning, outside holy days and the piodalan. Ask the customary village for the piodalan date before you go.
- Booking: not needed. Sarong rental usually isn't available, so bring your own.

Pair it with the cyclist relief at Pura Maduwe Karang and the pools of Air Sanih on the Kubutambahan coast; a night on the north coast with an AccessiaPass hotel voucher gives you time to climb the steps before the midday heat.
