Thousands of travellers pass through Singaraja every day on their way to Lovina, and almost all of them drive straight by. Yet at the northern edge of town, in Kampung Bugis, sits the most alive seafront public space in North Bali: the former Pelabuhan Buleleng — free, open daily, and at its liveliest just before sunset.
Bali's former front door
Before Benoa took over, this pier was Bali's main gateway. Dutch colonial trading ships and cruise liners docked here, and Singaraja was once the capital of Sunda Kecil until that status moved south in 1950. The landmark today is the Yudha Mandala Tama Monument, a bare-chested fighter holding the red-and-white flag with one hand pointing out to sea, built in 1987 to honour the Buleleng people's resistance; the Soenda Ketjil Museum stands nearby.
The best hours by the pier
- Best time: 16:30–19:00; the grounds are open from morning until around 22:00.
- Things to do: stroll along the waterfront, fish alongside locals, sit on the plaza, watch the fishing boats come home.
- Food: street vendors appear at dusk — grilled corn, bakso, satay, fritters and young coconut ice; usually Rp10,000–30,000 per portion.
- Current note: the floating jetty has been temporarily closed since January 2026 after storm waves damaged it, and the area has entered the Buleleng government's heritage redevelopment programme. The monument and seafront remain open — check conditions before you go.
Pair it with Ling Gwan Kiong Temple
A few minutes on foot from the monument stands Klenteng Ling Gwan Kiong, Singaraja's oldest Tri Dharma temple, here since 1873 — proof of the long Chinese trading presence at this port. Carry on into the lanes of Kampung Bugis, the old Bugis-Muslim quarter. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the combination.
