Right beside the Singaraja–Gilimanuk highway, inside West Bali National Park, a small hill carries hundreds of steps up to Makam Jayaprana at Teluk Terima. Most people drive straight past on their way to Menjangan Island, unaware that the summit holds Bali’s most tragic love legend.
The legend of Jayaprana and Layonsari
Jayaprana was an orphan raised in the Kalianget (Wanakeling) palace who married Layonsari, the most beautiful girl in his village. The king fell for Layonsari and sent Jayaprana to Teluk Terima on a fake errand — and there he was killed. Rather than become the king’s wife, Layonsari took her own life with a kris. To this day villagers believe wedding processions should not pass in front of the tomb.
The climb: steps and the view
- A cement stairway about 1.5 m wide rises roughly 200 m through the Teluk Terima forest; the steps number in the hundreds.
- An unhurried climb takes 10–20 minutes, with small pavilions to rest along the way.
- From the upper courtyard you see the curve of Teluk Terima bay, the dry savanna ridges of West Bali National Park, and the silhouette of Java across the strait on clear days.
- The main structure is a shrine where Balinese Hindus pray; many come asking for luck in love and peace of mind.
Etiquette and access
- This is a sacred site: wear a sarong and sash (bring your own to be safe), keep your voice down, never stand higher than the shrine, and menstruating women are not permitted to enter.
- About 13 km from Gilimanuk (20–25 minutes); roughly 30–40 minutes from Pemuteran; 3.5–4 hours from Denpasar via the north or west route.
- Labuhan Lalang jetty, the crossing point to Menjangan Island, is only minutes away — easy to combine before or after a boat trip.
- Visit from morning to late afternoon; avoid dusk, as the forest stairway has no lighting.

Since this corner sits far from south Bali, an overnight around Pemuteran or Gilimanuk makes far more sense — check AccessiaPass hotel vouchers before you set off.
