Set on the limestone hills of Ungasan, Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park is one of Bali's most iconic landmarks. Its main draw is the 121-meter Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue, depicting the god Vishnu riding the Garuda bird. Standing majestically atop the hill, the statue is visible from across southern Bali and stands as both an artistic masterpiece and a source of Indonesian cultural pride.
Main Attractions at GWK
Beyond the giant statue, this park of dozens of hectares offers several key areas worth seeing.
- Plaza Wisnu: an area with the Vishnu statue and sweeping hill views.
- Lotus Pond: a vast field flanked by limestone cliffs, often a venue for concerts and major events.
- Street Theater: a spot for dance performances and cultural parades throughout the day.
Kecak Dance at Sunset
One of the best experiences at GWK is watching the Kecak dance, a signature Balinese dance accompanied by a chorus of dozens of dancers chanting "cak-cak-cak" without instruments. Cultural performances such as the Barong, Garuda Wisnu, and Kecak dances are usually scheduled at intervals throughout the day into the evening. The Kecak show in the amphitheater against a sunset backdrop is stunning, so arrive early for a good seat.
