Petulu Village, Ubud: Watching Thousands of Herons Come Home at Dusk

About 3 kilometres north of central Ubud there is a stretch of village road that transforms completely every afternoon. As 17.30 approaches, the sky above Petulu Village slowly fills with white specks: thousands of kokokan — white herons — returning from the rice fields and marshes around Gianyar to roost in the trees lining both sides of the road. The noise is riotous, the movement looks like an upside-down snowstorm, and the whole thing can be watched for free from the roadside.

Why the Herons Chose Petulu

Villagers tell how the birds arrived all at once in November 1965, shortly after the village held a major purification ceremony. Ever since, the kokokan have been considered sacred and are protected by residents: they may not be hunted or driven away. The colony stretches roughly 400 metres, from Pura Desa and Pura Puseh at the northern end to Pura Agung Basukih in the south.

Best Timing and What You Will See

  • Arrival hours: activity picks up around 17.00, peaks between 17.30–18.15, then the birds settle on the branches.
  • Best season: October–March, the nesting season, when the flocks are densest.
  • Ideal duration: 45–60 minutes, enough to watch the arrival through to nightfall.
  • Watch points: there are three spots along the road; two of them have small warung facing the rice fields.

Pack These Before You Leave

  • A hat or folding umbrella — there is a great deal of bird droppings and the asphalt can get slippery.
  • Mosquito repellent; late afternoon beside the rice fields the mosquitoes are aggressive.
  • Small denomination cash for parking and the village donation.
  • A zoom lens or binoculars if you want close-up shots, and do not use a flash.
  • A light jacket and a small torch, since the ride back happens after dark.
