Hotel Tjampuhan Cave Spa, Ubud: A Massage Inside a Stone Grotto by the Wos River

In the Campuhan valley, about one kilometre northwest of central Ubud, Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa hides one of Bali's most unusual treatment spaces: a spa carved inside a stone cave at the foot of the valley, only a few metres from the flow of the Wos (Oos) river. The hotel itself has been legendary since 1928, when it still served as the guesthouse of the Ubud palace.

The Stone Cave Spa & Spring-Water Pools by the Wos River

  • Carved stone grotto: a hot–cold spring-water jacuzzi built inside a rock cavern, its walls and ceiling covered in carved figures, flowers and animals.
  • Semi-open pavilions: the massage rooms face the valley, so the sound of the river replaces background music.
  • Facilities: hot and cold whirlpool baths, a herbal mist sauna and a steam room are usually included in the packages.
  • Must-try: Traditional Mandi Lulur, Balinese Boreh and the Tjampuhan Healing Massage.

Terraced Gardens and the Walter Spies House

  • The grounds descend the valley slope via stone stairways and terraced tropical gardens — be ready for plenty of climbing up and down.
  • The Walter Spies House is still standing: a two-storey timber bungalow that was the German painter's home and studio, now rented out as a room.
  • Other room categories in classic Balinese style: Deluxe Agung, Premier Raja and the Tjampuhan Suite.
  • A historical note: in 1934 the compound served as the headquarters of the Pita Maha artists' association.

Getting There, Parking & Visiting Tips

  • Route: Jl. Raya Campuhan–Sanggingan, near the Campuhan bridge; roughly a 5-minute drive from Ubud Palace, with parking on the hotel grounds.
  • Non-staying guests: the spa does serve outside visitors, but don't rely on walking in — book your treatment at least a day ahead.
  • Best time: late afternoon, once the valley is in shade; it pairs well with a gentle walk along the Campuhan ridge before your massage.
