Candi Tebing Jukut Paku, Singakerta: Ancient Hermit Niches & a Holy Spring on the Wos River

Just 20–30 minutes' drive south-west of central Ubud, Candi Tebing Jukut Paku hides on the western cliff of the Wos River in Banjar Jukut Paku, Singakerta village. Unlike busy Gunung Kawi, this protected heritage site is quiet: a shrine carved straight into the rock face, flanked by hermit niches and clear-flowing spring spouts.

History & What You’ll See

  • Age: thought to date from the Old Balinese kingdom era (roughly the 8th–10th century); local tradition links it to a stopover by the sage Rsi Markandeya.
  • Cliff-carved temple in the form of a relief façade, two meditation niches and a water spout (jaladwara) beside it.
  • Holy spring used by villagers for melukat (spiritual cleansing).
  • Protected as cultural heritage by the regional heritage preservation office (BPK Region XV, Bali).

Access & Temple Etiquette

  • From the village lane, descend about 68 stone steps that are steep and sometimes slippery; the climb back up is a workout.
  • Tickets: no official ticket; bring a voluntary donation (usually IDR 10–20k).
  • Sarong (kamen) and sash (selendang) are required; cover shoulders and knees. Bring your own, as facilities are minimal (no toilets or stalls at the bottom).
  • Do not enter the sacred area while menstruating or in mourning (cuntaka). Never climb the reliefs or stand on shrines.
  • Want to do a melukat? Ask a local temple priest (pemangku) to guide you and bring a simple canang offering.
