Bukit Sari Songan, Kintamani: Lake Batur Sunrise on a 10-Minute Trek

If Mount Batur has become too crowded and the headlamp queue starts snaking up at three in the morning, Bukit Sari in Songan village offers a sunrise nearly as grand for a quarter of the effort. This hill of roughly 900 m above sea level stands right in the gap between Mount Batur and Lake Batur, near the Pura Ulun Danu Batur area in Kintamani.

Why Bukit Sari Instead of Batur's Summit

• Leave Ubud at 03.00–04.00 (roughly a 1.5–2 hour drive) so you arrive before the sky breaks around 06.00.
• Pre-dawn Kintamani can drop to 15–18°C: a windbreaker, thin gloves and a headlamp are near-essential.
• The Kintamani area levy runs around Rp20k (domestic) and Rp50k (foreign), plus a few thousand rupiah for parking.
• The dry season (May–September) is safest for clear skies; the dirt path turns slippery fast in rain.
