Bukit Cemara Karangasem: Sunrise Route, Entry Fee and Free Camping

Bukit Cemara (Cemara Hill) in Jungutan village, Bebandem, Karangasem has no official ticket and lets you camp for free. Per Budaya Bali (September 2025) entry is free, while some older sites mention a voluntary donation or about Rp10,000. The hill is not on Karangasem's 2026 attraction tariff list, but it does appear in the tourism office's official visitor data: roughly 1,600 visits in January-August 2026, mostly domestic travellers. It is about 18 km from Amlapura (35-45 minutes) and about 58 km from Denpasar (1.5-2 hours).

Morning route: Amlapura to sunrise

  • 04:15 Leave Amlapura towards Bebandem, then climb north to Jungutan. From Candidasa add about 20 minutes.
  • 05:00 Reach the parking area. The last stretch is steep, rocky and partly unpaved, so local sources recommend a scooter in good condition rather than a small car.
  • 05:30-06:30 Wait for sunrise, which in October comes at around 06:00 WITA. Mount Agung is clearest now, before the clouds rise.
  • 07:00 Coffee or instant noodles at the only warung on the hill. For a big group, bring your own food.

If you want to camp overnight

The hill is named after the casuarina (cemara) trees that grow densely here and shade the camping ground. The area beneath them can be used for camping at no cost (Budaya Bali, September 2025). There is no tent rental, so bring your own tent, sleeping bag, food and a warm jacket, because the temperature drops noticeably at night. Arrive before dark so you are not riding the rocky climb without light. Facilities are basic, just a toilet and a small warung, so carry your rubbish out.

Continue with half a day in Bebandem

  • 08:00 Head down to the snake-fruit gardens of Sibetan village, about 20 minutes by road. The salak agrotourism there is also still listed in the 2026 visitor data.
  • 10:00 If you want another hill, Bukit Nampo is in the same village of Jungutan.
  • 12:00 Return to Amlapura for lunch before the midday heat.

The downsides

This hill is not suitable for elderly visitors, small children or low cars, because the final climb is steep and rocky. In the rainy season (usually November-March) the dirt sections turn slippery. Mount Agung is also often clouded over after 08:00, so a midday visit usually gives you only the valley view. One more thing: in mid-October 2026 Pertalite fuel sales in Bali were rationed and run on an odd-even plate system on 17-19 October (detikBali, 16 October 2026), so fill your tank in Amlapura before heading up.
