Babi Guling Pande Egi, Beng: Rp39k Special Plate by Gianyar Paddies

A special plate at Warung Babi Guling Pande Egi in Banjar Pande, Beng village, Gianyar, cost Rp39,000 as of June 2026: rice, crackling, roast pork, Balinese sausage, lawar, jackfruit curry and broth served on separate plates. The warung opens 08:00-21:00 daily, about 30 minutes by car from central Ubud, on the edge of rice fields a little away from the main road.

What to order and what it costs

The order reviewers mention most is the special plate (porsi spesial), which comes with more sides than the standard mixed rice. Add the pork satay set at Rp18k and a drink (fresh lemonade around Rp18k, or a young coconut) and one person usually spends Rp60-80k. Standard plates are cheaper: in 2021 the regular plate was Rp26k and the jumbo Rp33k, so prices have crept up a few thousand since.

  • Special plate: Rp39k, the safest pick on a first visit.
  • Satay set: Rp18k, grilled over charcoal.
  • Kuah ares (pork soup with banana stem), good for taming the chilli in the lawar.

Prices checked September 2026 against a review dated June 2026; the board at the counter may have changed.

When to go, and does it sell out?

Unlike morning babi guling stalls that are empty by 11am, Pande Egi roasts pigs in rotation through the day. According to detikBali (2022) it sells 180-200 plates on a normal day and up to 300 on busy ones. None of the sources we checked records a fixed sell-out time. The real issue is queuing: IDN Times (2024) says diners must be ready to wait for a seat in holiday season, and on weekends the line can reach the car park. On weekdays, arrive before 11:30 or after 14:00.

An honest verdict

The strengths are clear: a clean, orderly kitchen, a two-storey dining room facing the paddies, and consistent plates. The owner, Pande Putu Anggia (Dodo), set out to erase the idea that Balinese warungs are dirty. The warung opened on 9 December 2016, after his family had roasted whole pigs to order for ceremonies since 1998.

The drawbacks: it sits down a village road, so your own scooter or a hired driver is far easier than waiting for a ride-hailing pickup home. It feels more like a restaurant than a roadside stall, and it costs a little more than other village babi guling in Gianyar, which still charge Rp20-30k. If you are staying put in Ubud, Warung Teges in Peliatan is closer.
