Penampahan Galungan

Tuesday, 12 January 2027 in 82 days

The day before Galungan: pigs are butchered before dawn, markets are packed, and penjor poles go up along every street.

Practical advice

The best day of the year for babi guling — the pork is freshest. Traditional markets are chaotic in the morning; go before 8am or skip them.

What happens

Penampahan is preparation day. From before dawn families butcher a pig together with neighbours, cook lawar and satay, then raise the penjor — a tall curved bamboo pole dressed in young palm leaf — in front of the house. By late afternoon whole village streets are lined with them.

Impact on your trip

Heavy traffic around markets in the morning and some staff leaving work early. Otherwise normal.

What you can do

A slow late-afternoon ride through village streets to watch the penjor go up is one of the finest free sights in Bali. Famous babi guling warungs are extremely busy today.

Balinese holy days follow the Pawukon and Saka calendars; Nyepi and national holiday dates follow official government decrees. If your dates are critical, confirm once more with your hotel or airline.
