Ceremony Balinese holy day Official date

Pagerwesi

Wednesday, 29 December 2027 in 433 days

The "iron fence" day — strengthening the self against bad influences. Family prayers, biggest in North Bali.

Practical advice

Nothing meaningful closes. Celebrations are much larger around Singaraja than in the south.

What happens

Pagerwesi means "iron fence": a day for fortifying the mind so the knowledge received at Saraswati is not lost. Families pray at their house temple and present offerings in the morning.

Impact on your trip

Minimal in South Bali. In the north — Singaraja, Buleleng — it is a much bigger occasion and some small businesses close for half a day.

What you can do

If you happen to be in the north, this is a rare chance to see a ceremony untouched by tourism. In the south, carry on with your plans as normal.

Balinese holy days follow the Pawukon and Saka calendars; Nyepi and national holiday dates follow official government decrees. If your dates are critical, confirm once more with your hotel or airline.
