Melasti 2027

Thursday, 4 March 2027 – 6 March 2027 in 133 days

Purification processions to the sea: thousands dressed in white carry temple heirlooms to the beach.

Practical advice

Sanur, Kuta, Petitenget and Masceti beaches close temporarily during the procession. Pull over, give way, and never photograph from in front of the parade.

What happens

A few days before Nyepi entire villages carry their sacred temple objects to the sea or a spring to be purified. Processions dressed in white walk behind gamelan players, sometimes for miles. It is one of the most striking sights in Bali.

Impact on your trip

Roads to the coast close temporarily and gridlock around procession times. Some stretches of beach are closed to the public while the ceremony takes place.

How to watch respectfully

Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), stand to the side, never cut through the line, and never shoot from a position higher than the sacred objects. Exact dates differ from village to village — ask your hotel for the local schedule.
