Partly closed Balinese holy day Official date

Kuningan

Saturday, 21 August 2027 in 303 days

The close of the Galungan period — ancestors return. Ceremonies must finish before midday.

Practical advice

Visit a temple before noon if you want to see the ceremony; after that it is over. Some small shops close in the morning.

What happens

Kuningan falls ten days after Galungan and closes the cycle: ancestral spirits return to their realm. Offerings today feature yellow rice, and everything must be completed before midday — the spirits are believed to leave as the sun begins to fall.

Impact on your trip

Similar to Galungan but lighter: some small shops close in the morning and reopen by midday. Major temples such as Sakenan on Serangan island get very busy.

What you can see

To witness the ceremony, arrive between 8am and 11am. After midday life returns to normal. Penjor poles stay up for several days afterwards.

Balinese holy days follow the Pawukon and Saka calendars; Nyepi and national holiday dates follow official government decrees. If your dates are critical, confirm once more with your hotel or airline.
