How Old Do You Have to Be to Check In to a Hotel in Bali?

Usually 18, but some Bali hotels require 17 or 21. No Indonesian law sets a minimum hotel check-in age; each property decides and publishes it in its policies. The examples below were checked in October 2026 on official hotel sites and booking pages.

Real check-in age limits in Bali

  • Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach: its official FAQ says the minimum check-in age is 18.
  • Aloft Bali Seminyak (Marriott): its marriott.com property page lists a minimum check-in age of 21.
  • Marriott's Bali Nusa Dua Gardens: the Hotels.com listing shows a minimum check-in age of 17.
  • Bale Seminyak: Hotels.com and Travelocity list 18.
  • Sini Vie Seminyak: an adults-only property; Hotels.com says guests under 18 are not permitted.

Even within one chain the number varies by property, so don't assume every Marriott or every Accor uses the same rule.

Before you book: the mistakes people make most

1. Assuming an ID card means you can check in

Law 24/2013 amending the Population Administration Law requires Indonesians to hold an e-KTP from age 17 or once married. The KTP proves identity, not the right to a room. A hotel can still turn away a 17-year-old if its policy is 18 or 21. Hotels usually reason that the guest must be able to enter a contract and be liable for charges or damage. Article 330 of the Indonesian Civil Code itself treats people under 21 who are unmarried as minors.

2. Looking at the price, not the policy

On Booking.com, Agoda or Hotels.com, the minimum age sits under "House rules" or "Policies", not next to the room photos. On chain websites, search the FAQ for "minimum age to check in". If no number is shown, email the hotel and keep the reply.

3. Booker and guest are different people

Parents often book under their own name for a teenager travelling with friends. At check-in, hotels usually ask for the booker or responsible adult to be present with ID and the card used for payment. If the parent isn't travelling, ask first whether the hotel accepts an authorisation letter or credit card authorisation form.

4. Forgetting the deposit

Many hotels take a deposit on a credit card in the guest's name. Guests aged 18 to 20 often only have a debit card or e-wallet. Ask whether a cash deposit is accepted and how much it is.

5. Teenagers staying without parents

Indonesia's Child Protection Law (Law 23/2002 as amended by Law 35/2014) defines a child as anyone under 18. A hotel that accepts an unaccompanied minor takes on serious risk, so most refuse even when the booking is paid. If someone under 18 travels with relatives or a school group, bring a parental consent letter and a copy of the parent's ID. Children visiting Bali with only one parent are covered in our article on consent letters for travelling with one parent.

6. Misreading "adults-only"

"Adults-only" sets the minimum age of anyone staying, often 16 or 18, while the check-in age sets who can be the lead guest. The two can differ at the same property. Child-free resorts and their age limits are listed in our adults-only hotels in Bali article.

7. Foreign visitors without their original passport

Foreign guests still need to show a passport at check-in, because Law 6/2011 on Immigration requires accommodation managers to provide data on foreign guests when immigration officers ask. The hotel only needs to scan or photograph it; holding on to it is a separate issue covered in our article on hotels keeping passports.

If you are using an AccessiaPass voucher, check the hotel's check-in age before you redeem it, especially when the lead guest is 17 to 20.

In short

  • 17: has a KTP, but most hotels won't accept them as lead guest yet.
  • 18: the most common limit in Bali.
  • 21: used by some hotels, resorts and villas, often to discourage party groups.
  • Under 18 without parents: expect a refusal unless the hotel confirms otherwise in writing.

A written answer from the hotel is your best protection. Keep that email on your phone in case the night receptionist applies a different rule.
