While hundreds of people queue for photos around Lake Beratan, the 2,096-metre mountain on the other side often has no climbers at all. Gunung Catur — Balinese call it Puncak Mangu — holds Pura Puncak Mangu at its highest point, one of the most revered temples on the island. This is a forest climb, not a volcanic-ash slog.
Mossy Forest Trail, Not a Dusty Slope
Unlike bare, dusty Batur, the Catur trail pushes through mountain forest that stays damp year-round. Tree roots become natural stairs, the rocks are slick with moss, and cloud often rolls in before midday.
- Around 2–3 hours up and 1.5–2 hours down; 4–6 hours total at a relaxed pace.
- Common trailheads: the Bedugul area near Pura Ulun Danu Beratan and Pancasari Village; an alternative starts from Pelaga Village, Petang District.
- There are no warungs, drinking water sources, or reliable phone signal anywhere on the trail.
Costs and the Best Start Time
- Entry via the Bedugul trailhead is around Rp10,000 per person, plus motorbike or car parking.
- Local guides: roughly Rp300,000–600,000 for a small group — agree the price a day ahead.
- Start between 5am and 6am so you reach the summit before the cloud thickens.
- Avoid the peak rainy season (December–February); the clay trail turns treacherously slippery.
Gear and Etiquette at the Summit Temple
Puncak Mangu is not just a high point — it is an active temple. Put on a sarong and sash before entering the temple courtyard, never climb on the shrines, and give worshippers space.
- Grippy-soled shoes, a rain jacket, a torch or headlamp, and at least 2 litres of water each.
- Long trousers and long sleeves — long-tailed macaques roam near the summit.
- Keep food sealed inside your bag; never eat in the open near a troop of monkeys.
