Thomas Beach, Uluwatu: The Hidden White-Sand Bay Below the Pecatu Cliffs

Among Uluwatu’s string of cliff beaches, Thomas Beach still feels like a small secret. It sits in Pecatu village just off Jl. Labuansait, right next door to the far busier Padang Padang — the difference being that the white sand here runs for about 200 metres, stays wide open, and often holds only a dozen people. To get down you take a steep concrete staircase built into the cliff face, roughly 150 steps, or the dirt path from the warung parking area up top.

What Makes It Special

  • Genuinely spacious white sand. You can walk a long way without stepping over anyone’s towel.
  • Limestone cliff walls that throw shade in the late afternoon and make a photo backdrop with no queue.
  • Simple cliff-top warungs for young coconuts, nasi goreng or mi goreng at warung prices, not beach club prices.
  • Sunset straight out over the Indian Ocean around 6pm, with sun loungers and umbrellas to rent for about Rp50k.

Access, Parking and Best Timing

  • The entrance alley is across from Suka Espresso on Jl. Labuansait; follow the dirt track to the cliff-top car park.
  • Parking for a scooter or car is usually Rp5–15k. Entry is free or a small donation.
  • The stairs take 5–10 minutes each way. Wear comfortable footwear, not slippery flip-flops.
  • Come in the morning for empty sand and clear water, or late afternoon for sunset.
  • There is no ATM near the beach. Bring enough cash and your own drinking water.

Surf and Safety

  • The waves suit intermediate surfers; complete beginners are better off learning on a gently shelving sandy beach.
  • At low tide reef and rocks appear in places — walk slowly and do not jump off boulders.
  • Currents can strengthen on an incoming tide and there is no permanent lifeguard, so do not swim far out and keep an eye on children.

Practical Info & Booking

  • Location: Jl. Labuansait, Pecatu — View on Google Maps
  • Booking: none needed; the beach is public. Warungs and lounger rental are paid in cash on the spot.
