About 20 minutes north of central Ubud, Tegallalang Rice Terrace is Bali’s most iconic valley of stepped rice paddies. Its slopes are shaped by the traditional subak irrigation system, recognised by UNESCO as cultural heritage, creating cascading green steps down into the valley. This is the landscape that fills postcards and Instagram feeds about Bali.
Best Time to Visit
Come as early as possible. The ticket booth usually gets busy around 9 a.m., so arriving at 7–8 a.m. means soft light, cool air, thin mist in the valley, and far fewer people in your photos. Late afternoon before sunset is also lovely, but midday tends to be hot and crowded with tour groups.
- Best: 7–9 a.m.
- Avoid: 11 a.m.–2 p.m. (hot & crowded)
- Entry ticket: around Rp25,000 per person; keep small cash for “donations” to farmers at some points down in the fields
Walking the Terraces & Jungle Swing
The footpath descends across the paddies, bamboo bridges, and photo spots. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground can be slippery. Along the valley ridge stand several iconic swings such as those at Alas Harum, from around Rp100–150k including a flowing dress for photos, plus a skybridge and luwak coffee plantation.
Cafes Overlooking the Fields
The cliff edge is lined with cafes whose terraces face the terraces. Tegal Sari, D'Tukad, and the cafes at Alas Harum serve coffee, fresh juices, and Indonesian–Western dishes with sweeping green views. Ordering a coffee or light lunch is a relaxed way to enjoy the scenery without hiking far down into the fields.
