Surfing Shipwrecks, Nusa Lembongan: Level, Tide, Getting Out

Shipwrecks is a right-hander breaking over reef about 500 m off Jungutbatu Beach, roughly in front of Yogi Beach Bungalows. It is the best-known wave on Nusa Lembongan and the most surfed. It is best on a mid to high tide, with at least 1.4 m of water over the reef. Information checked in October 2026 against surf school and Bali operator guides.

Who is it for?

Intermediate surfers and up. The Bali Surfing Camp guide says plainly that beginners should not surf it. If you have only just started standing up, several guides point to nearby Playgrounds as the friendlier wave.

When is it good?

  • Season: the dry season, roughly April to October, when south-east trade winds blow offshore. In the wet season winds are mostly onshore.
  • Swell: south to south-west. Around 4-6 ft is described as ideal. Near double overhead it can close out and connect to Razors.
  • Tide: avoid low tide, when the reef is exposed. Around the full moon, big tidal swings bring strong currents.

How do you get to the lineup?

The safest option is hiring a local boatman on Jungutbatu Beach for drop-off and pick-up. There is no posted rate, so agree on the price and pick-up time before you get in. The budget option is paddling from shore across the seaweed farms, only on a mid tide. One Bali operator sells one-day surf trips from US$95 per person (minimum four people). The beach route and quiet hours are in our article on Jungutbatu Beach.

What does it cost to get onto the island?

Since 1 September 2026 the Nusa Lembongan-Ceningan area levy is Rp25,000 per adult and Rp15,000 for children aged 4-13 (Klungkung Regional Regulation 4/2026). How to pay is covered in our Nusa Penida levy article. A fast boat from Sanur costs about Rp250,000-350,000 one way, so check at the counter.

What are the hazards?

  • Very sharp, shallow reef. Bring booties and antiseptic.
  • Strong currents and conditions that change quickly.
  • Ropes and stakes from the seaweed farms on the paddle route.
  • A crowded lineup in high season, so respect the local pecking order.

Check the tide table the night before. A morning mid-tide window often lines up with the calmest winds of the day.
