Electric Scooter and EV Car Rental in Bali 2026: Costs, SPKLU Charging, Safe Routes and Smarter Stays

Bali is becoming friendlier to electric vehicles: the SPKLU charging network is growing fast and electric scooter rentals are appearing in Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud. But EVs here play by their own rules — limited range, hills that drain batteries, and rental shops that are not all honest. Here is a realistic picture of costs, infrastructure and routes for 2026.

Bali’s Charging Infrastructure in 2026

  • By mid-2026 Bali counted roughly 200 SPKLU charging units, about 153 of them operated by PLN and the rest by partners, spread across every regency and city.
  • Denpasar alone has around 29 active SPKLU points, ranging from 7.4 kW AC to ultrafast DC.
  • Locations and live status can be checked in the PLN Mobile or Charge.IN apps before you set off, including whether a unit is already occupied.
  • SPKLU electricity costs roughly Rp2,466–Rp2,900 per kWh; the service fee is capped at about Rp25,000 per fast-charging session and about Rp57,000 for ultrafast. Tariffs may change.
  • Many hotels and large malls in Denpasar, Kuta, Sanur and Ubud now offer guest chargers — confirm it when booking rather than assuming.

Rental Price Ranges: Electric vs Petrol Scooters

  • Electric scooters: roughly Rp39,000–Rp150,000 per day depending on model, area and rental length; weekly or monthly deals cut the daily rate substantially.
  • Popular petrol scooters such as the Beat, Vario or Scoopy: about Rp60,000–Rp90,000 per day, roughly Rp385,000–Rp875,000 weekly and about Rp1.5–3.5 million monthly.
  • Compact EV cars such as the Wuling Air EV: about Rp300,000–Rp450,000 per day self-drive, while premium electric SUVs or MPVs run from around Rp700,000 to several million rupiah a day.
  • Charging an electric scooter is very cheap: a 1.5–2 kWh battery needs only about Rp4,000–Rp6,000 for a full charge, far below petrol costs.
  • Check whether the rate includes the charger, two helmets and a rain poncho; some operators add a separate deposit. All figures are ranges and may change.

Realistic Range and Which Routes Are Safe

  • Manufacturers claim 60–125 km per charge for electric scooters, but Bali reality — two riders, heat and hills — often leaves you 40–70 km.
  • Recharging a scooter typically takes 3–7 hours, so plan to charge overnight at your accommodation rather than mid-trip.
  • Safe for EVs: Canggu–Seminyak–Kuta, Sanur–Denpasar and around Ubud, where daily distances rarely exceed 25–30 km.
  • Risky: Kintamani, Munduk, Amed or an Uluwatu round trip in one day; these are 60–120 km with long climbs that slash your range.
  • For longer routes, an EV car with planned SPKLU stops, or a car with a driver, is far safer than an electric scooter.
  • Always come back with at least 20 percent battery; the climbs of northern and eastern Bali drain power faster than any app predicts.

Licences, Helmets and Rules That Are Enforced

  • Foreign visitors must carry an International Driving Permit paired with their home licence, or a valid Indonesian licence.
  • An SNI-standard helmet is mandatory for rider and passenger; police checks are routine in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud.
  • On-the-spot fines for document or helmet violations are usually around Rp250,000–Rp500,000, and the consequences are far heavier if you crash.
  • Many travel insurance policies exclude motorbike accidents when the rider had no valid licence — read your policy before renting.
  • Foreign visitors also pay the Bali tourist levy of Rp150,000 per visit, separate from any rental cost.

How to Spot an Honest Rental

  • Ask for a written contract covering the daily rate, deposit, damage liability and what happens if the battery dies on the road.
  • Test front and rear brakes, tyres, lights and the battery gauge before signing; film the vehicle from every angle as proof of its original condition.
  • Ask about battery age and remaining capacity — older units often lose 20–30 percent of their advertised range.
  • Never hand over your original passport as security; offer a cash deposit or a copy instead.
  • Make sure there is a 24-hour help number, pickup service in case of breakdown, and the correct charger and adapter for that specific model.

The biggest saving on an electric trip usually comes from where you sleep, not what you ride. An AccessiaPass hotel voucher lets you lock in the room rate while choosing a property with charging on site, so your scooter or EV is full every morning without queueing at a public SPKLU. For an itinerary that moves between Canggu, Ubud and Sanur, booking a few nights at a time with vouchers keeps the total accommodation bill under control.
