Seganing Waterfall, Nusa Penida: The Island's Most Demanding Cliff Descent

On the southwest coast of Nusa Penida, fresh water seeps out of a cliff face and falls straight towards the sea. That is Seganing Waterfall — a spring-fed waterfall you can only reach by descending a staircase and rock path along an extremely steep cliff, holding onto ropes and iron ladders installed by locals. Waiting below is a clear natural pool and an ocean panorama that is almost always empty.

Safety First — Read This Before You Go

This is not a family-friendly waterfall. The descent is close to vertical in places and there is no rescue service at the bottom.

  • Not for beginners, small children, or anyone afraid of heights. If you hesitate in the first 10 metres, turn back — that is perfectly fine.
  • Avoid it during or after rain. The rock and steps become dangerously slippery.
  • Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops. Both hands must be free — use a small backpack.
  • Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person; there is no warung below. Never descend alone.
  • Check the ropes and iron footholds before committing; if anything looks damaged, call it off.

Access, Duration and Best Timing

  • The road to the parking point is bad — broken concrete, loose rock and sharp climbs. Use a local driver or join a tour rather than riding an automatic scooter yourself if you lack experience on this terrain.
  • From Toyapakeh or the harbour, allow roughly 45–60 minutes of driving.
  • Descent and ascent take about 20–30 minutes down and 30–45 minutes back up depending on fitness. Budget 2–3 hours in total including a swim.
  • Early morning is ideal: cooler air, drier rock and a far easier climb back out.
  • Expect a small local parking or access fee, usually around Rp10,000–20,000.

Combine It with Kelingking and Crystal Bay

Seganing sits on the island's southwest side, along the most popular western route. Build a single day around it: Kelingking Beach at first light, Seganing before midday, then unwind and watch the sunset at Crystal Bay — all within the same road corridor.
