Pura Langgar Bunutin, Bangli: A Hindu Temple Built Like a Prayer House

Bali has thousands of temples, but Pura Langgar in Bunutin Village, Bangli, is genuinely one of a kind. Its formal name is Pura Penataran Agung Dalem Jawa, and its main structure is shaped like a langgar, a small Muslim prayer house — roughly 6x6 metres square — standing above a pond covered in lotus flowers. It is one of Bali's true hidden gems, rarely on any tourist itinerary.

The Story Behind Pura Langgar

According to local chronicles, the temple was built by Dalem Dewa Agung Wilis, king of Bunutin. His son, I Dewa Agung Mas Blambangan, suffered an illness no healer could cure. Through spiritual guidance the family was told to erect a langgar-like building within the palace grounds — and the young prince's health gradually recovered.
