Between Ngurah Rai Airport and Uluwatu, tucked into the Desa Adat Kutuh/Jimbaran area of Kuta Selatan, Badung Regency, stands a temple built right at the mouth of a limestone cave. Its name is Pura Goa Peteng Alam Tunjung Mekar — goa means cave, peteng means dark, alam refers to the natural process that shaped it, and tunjung mekar means hope like a lotus in bloom. It sits about three minutes from Kubu Jimbaran Beach, yet it feels like another world.
A Cave That Splits in Two
To reach the entrance you follow a rough limestone track about 1.5 kilometres long. Above the cave mouth grows an old banyan tree, centuries old, its aerial roots hanging down. Inside, the cave branches into two passages: one running north about 250 metres deep, the other running south about 300 metres.
- The northern passage is used for melukat, the ritual of self-purification.
- Many Balinese come here to pray for healing, not to sightsee.
Etiquette: A Place of Worship, Not a Backdrop
Pura Goa Peteng is not a commercial attraction. There is no official ticket — only dana punia, a voluntary donation, and parking paid as you see fit. Modest dress is required: wear a kain (sarong) and a selendang (sash). Following the general rule for Balinese temples, women who are menstruating may not enter the temple grounds. Speak softly and ask permission before taking photographs.
Preparation and Who Should Stay Out
- Bring a torch or phone light — inside it is dark and humid.
- Wear footwear with grip; the cave floor is wet.
- Go accompanied by a pemangku (temple priest) or a local resident.
- Best time: a weekday morning, when it is quietest.
- Not advisable for anyone with claustrophobia or for very young children.
