Pantai Pangkung Tibah, Tabanan: Quiet Black Sand Near Tanah Lot

Barely 20 minutes east of Tanah Lot, the Tabanan coastline changes completely. No tour buses, no rows of souvenir stalls — just rice paddies that stop right at the edge of the black sand. This is Pantai Pangkung Tibah in Pangkung Tibah village, Kediri district, Tabanan regency: a wide volcanic beach left almost entirely undeveloped, and a calm escape from the crowds of southern Bali.

Black Sand That Glitters

The sand is deep black and fine, volcanic material carried down by the rivers from the slopes of Mount Batukaru. When a wave washes over it, the wet surface reflects the light like a mirror.

  • Landscape: a long sweep of sand, low cliffs in places, and rice fields that run right up to the shoreline.
  • Atmosphere: very quiet on weekdays; the people you meet are mostly locals, anglers and late-afternoon runners.
  • Things to do: walking the shore, cycling, horse riding, fishing, and shooting silhouettes at dusk.

Sunset and Turtle Hatchlings

  • Golden hour: arrive around 5.30 pm and stay until the sun is fully down — the horizon here is wide open, with no buildings in the way.
  • Turtles: this stretch of coast is still a nesting site. In September 2023 around 600 hatchlings were released here during a conservation event. These releases are occasional, not a daily attraction.
  • Waves: parts of the break are gentle enough for beginner surfers, but the current can still run strong.

Route, Safety and Facilities

  • Getting there: about 35 km from Denpasar, roughly 1–1.5 hours via the Kediri–Tanah Lot road and then onto village lanes; the final stretch is narrow, so a scooter or small car is easiest.
  • Safety: do not swim far from shore — the current can be strong and there are no lifeguards. Lighting is minimal, so avoid arriving after dark.
  • Facilities: a large parking area, a few gazebos and a small number of simple warung. There is no accommodation on the beach itself; the nearest is the Nirjhara resort in Banjar Kedungu, about a seven-minute drive away.
  • Bring your own: drinking water, a hat, something to sit on, a rubbish bag, and small cash for parking.

Practical Information & Booking

  • Location: View on Google Maps
  • Hours & cost: open 24 hours with no official entrance ticket; keep about Rp2,000–5,000 for a motorbike and Rp5,000–10,000 for a car in case a parking attendant is on duty.
  • Booking: none needed — simply turn up; order food and drinks at the local warung.
