Mengening Beach, Cemagi: How to Get There, Quiet Hours, Swimming

Mengening Beach sits in Cemagi village, Mengwi, Badung, about 4 km in a straight line north-west of Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu. Entry is free. You only pay for parking, which several 2024-2025 travel sources put at around Rp2,000 for a scooter and Rp5,000 for a car (checked online in October 2026; the rate on site may differ). The sand is black, and on a rock outcrop reaching into the sea stands Pura Gede Luhur Batu Ngaus, the temple of the Cemagi customary village.

Routes from Canggu, Seminyak and Tanah Lot

  • From Canggu (Batu Bolong or Pererenan): take Jl. Pantai Seseh, then turn into Jl. Pantai Mengening. Roughly 15-25 minutes by scooter, depending on the Pererenan junction.
  • From Seminyak or Kerobokan: follow Jl. Raya Canggu towards Munggu and Cemagi. Allow 35-50 minutes; the Canggu roads are often jammed in the afternoon.
  • From Tanah Lot: head south-east via Munggu, about 20-30 minutes. Many people pair the two: Tanah Lot at midday, Mengening for sunset.

The coastal road to Cemagi collapsed from wave erosion in December 2022 (detikBali), and visitors have since been barred from parking along the road near the temple. Use the attended parking area, not the roadside.

Quietest hours

Morning until about 3 pm is the emptiest stretch. It fills up from 4 pm as people arrive for sunset and pre-wedding shoots, and visitor reviews on Wanderlog suggest arriving around then because car spaces go fast. In early October the sun sets at about 6.05-6.15 pm (WITA). At low tide the black reef in front of the temple is exposed and walkable; at high tide the waves break straight onto the rocks.

Can you swim?

Better not. The seabed is rocky, the surf on this west coast is strong, and visitor reviews say there are no lifeguards. The sources checked show no Balawista (lifeguard) post at Mengening, unlike Canggu's main beaches, which have posts and flags. Paddling ankle-deep at low tide is fine; swimming out is not. Our Bali beach safety guide explains the red-and-yellow flags and how to get out of a rip current.

The downsides

Car parking is tight. On busy afternoons some reviewers complain about loud music from the warungs. Facilities are limited to small food stalls and basic toilets. The temple grounds are a place of worship: do not climb the shrines and stay out during ceremonies.

Seseh Beach is less than 2 km to the south. If Mengening's parking is full near sunset, Seseh is the closest fallback with the same black sand and a similar feel.
