Pantai Kusamba, Klungkung: Colourful Jukung Boats and Salt Dried in Coconut Logs

On the shore of Kusamba village, Dawan district, Klungkung, the beach is not a place to sunbathe. Its volcanic black sand is used to moor dozens of colourful outrigger jukung, to dry seawater into salt, and to smoke skipjack tuna. This is a Balinese working beach — about an hour from Denpasar via the Ida Bagus Mantra Bypass, just 1 km before Pura Goa Lawah.

Kusamba Salt and the Coconut-Log Palungan

The Kusamba method differs from every other salt centre in Bali, including Amed, which tourists know better.

  • Beach sand is doused with seawater again and again, then sun-dried until the grains are saturated with salt.
  • That sand is filtered inside a thatched hut into a concentrated brine.
  • The brine is poured into a palungan — a coconut trunk split in half and hollowed out — and left in the sun for hours until white crystals form.
  • Salt is sold straight from the hut, roughly Rp15,000–25,000 per kilogram.

Jukung, the Jetty and the Smokehouses

  • Rows of jukung painted red, blue and yellow; most tightly packed in the morning after the night's fishing.
  • The traditional Tribuana jetty serves supply boats to Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan — a crossing of about 15–30 minutes.
  • Kusamba is Bali's largest fish-smoking centre; dozens of stalls smoke tuna and sardines every day.

Best Time and Photography Etiquette

  • 06:00–09:00: boats come in, the catch is unloaded, the light is softest.
  • 15:30–18:00: salt farmers harvest the palungan against the silhouette of Nusa Penida.
  • Avoid midday; the heat is fierce and black sand throws back a harsh glare.
  • Ask permission before photographing people. Buying a kilo of salt is the polite thank-you.
  • The current and surf are strong — this is not a swimming beach.
