Karang Rata Beach is in Pengulon village, Gerokgak district, about 35 km west of Singaraja and under 1 km from Celukan Bawang port. From Lovina the drive takes around 45 minutes; from Gilimanuk, about 1 hour 15 minutes. The beach is still being developed: Buleleng's tourism office inspected it on 14 November 2025 as a candidate flagship attraction for the village, so facilities are basic.
Route from Singaraja and Lovina
- Singaraja to Seririt (about 18-20 km, 30-40 minutes): follow the north coast road west through Kalibukbuk, Lovina. If you stay in Lovina, count from here.
- Seririt to Celukan Bawang (about 15 km, 20-25 minutes): keep heading west on the Seririt-Gilimanuk road through Kalisada, Pangkungparuk, Banjar Asem and Tinga-Tinga.
- Final turn: roughly 600 m before Celukan Bawang port, turn right onto the village road toward the sea, then about 2 km to the beach in Banjar Tegallantang. If you can see the port gate, you have gone too far.
Route from Gilimanuk and Pemuteran
From Gilimanuk, take the main road east for about 55 km via Pemuteran, Pulaki and Gondol. Pass Celukan Bawang port, then turn left about 600 m after it. Allow 1 hour 15 minutes by car, longer when port trucks are busy. Pemuteran is roughly 25 km away (about 35 minutes), so the beach pairs easily with Gili Putih Sumberkima or Gondol Beach on the same road.
Fill up first. detikBali (14 October 2026) reported long queues and petrol stations running dry in several regencies, Buleleng included. Fill the tank in Singaraja, Seririt or Gilimanuk before the Gerokgak stretch.
Canoe, swimming and camping prices
Prices from the Pengulon tourism village profile on Jadesta (the tourism ministry portal), checked October 2026:
- Beach swim package Rp35,000 per person: tube float, pedal duck, board float, plus rinse area and changing room.
- Canoe from Rp35,000 (equipment rental; duration not stated).
- Camping Rp200,000: one tent with mattress, pillow and firewood.
- Dolphin trip Rp75,000 on a local fishing boat. It is unclear whether that is per person or per boat, so ask first. For a more established option, see the Lovina dolphin tour.
- Trek to Pengulon Waterfall Rp200,000.
Entrance fees and opening hours have not been published on Jadesta or the Buleleng government site.
Who should skip it
If you want a quiet beach with no industry in view, choose another spot. Celukan Bawang port is only about 0.6 km away and the Celukan Bawang coal power plant about 2.5 km, so ships and smokestacks end up in your photos. The village calls the sand white, but published photos show dark grey sand. In the dry season the midday sun is harsh and shade is limited, so come early or near sunset. Gerokgak district held a clean-up here on 22 June 2025; take your rubbish home.
Before you go
- Location: View on Google Maps
- Canoe, camping and boat packages: contact the Pengulon tourism group (Pokdarwis) via the Jadesta profile, or ask at the beach post.
- Recent visitor photos: search on Instagram
- If you are not camping, it is easier to stay in Lovina or Pemuteran and arrive in the morning; AccessiaPass has hotel vouchers in both areas.
Bring water, a hat and small cash notes. Food stalls near the beach are still few.
