Pantai Delod Berawah, Jembrana: Black Sand, a Seawater Pool and Crowd-Free Sunsets

On Jembrana's southern coast, about 10 kilometres from the centre of Negara town, Pantai Delod Berawah stretches out in volcanic black sand that glitters under the late afternoon sun. This beach in Delod Berawah village, Mendoyo district, is almost untouched by tour groups. Most visitors are local Jembrana families: children playing in the sand, parents settled into the warungs, and a giant mermaid statue serving as the obligatory photo backdrop.

What Makes This Beach Different

  • Jet-black sand along the entire shoreline; locals believe the warm sand helps ease aches and rheumatism.
  • Big waves that appeal to experienced surfers, but are not safe for casual swimming. Stick to paddling at the edge.
  • The iconic mermaid statue that has become the beach's landmark.
  • Makepung practice runs, Jembrana's traditional buffalo races, are often held on the track near the beach on weekends during training season.

Taman Rekreasi Tirta Samudra

On the eastern side of the beach stands Taman Rekreasi Tirta Samudra Delod Berawah, a district-run recreation park with seawater pools for adults and children, a mini waterboom, rinse areas and gazebos facing the sea. Tickets are very cheap, around Rp5k for adults and Rp3k for children, making it a safe alternative when the surf is high.

Route and Best Timing

  • About 95 km from Denpasar, a 2.5–3 hour drive along the Denpasar–Gilimanuk national road.
  • Easy landmark: turn south at Pasar Tegalcangkring, then continue roughly 2.5 km through rice fields to the shore.
  • The beach is open access; locals start arriving from 4pm until dusk. Come around 4.30pm for the sunset.
  • Bring small cash, because the warungs and the parking post do not take cards.

Practical Info & Booking

  • Location (Google Maps): View on Google Maps
  • Access & tickets: the beach itself has no entry ticket; you only pay a parking fee of roughly Rp2–5k for a motorbike and Rp5–10k for a car. The Tirta Samudra pool is paid at the gate, no reservation needed.
  • Social media: search on Instagram
  • Tips: wear flip-flops because the sand gets hot at midday, and bring a hat, drinking water and a towel if you plan to swim in the pool.
