Nyepi Segara 2026 in Nusa Penida: Expected Sunday 27 September, 24 Hours of Silent Sea & No Fast Boats

Once a year the sea around Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan is given a day of rest. During Nyepi Segara (the “sea Nyepi”) there are no fast boats, crossings, snorkelling or dive trips and no fishing boats for roughly 24 hours. The tradition is part of the Ngusaba rites of Purnama Kapat at Nusa Penida's great temples; in 2025 all 72 boats at Sanur harbour stayed idle (NusaBali, 8 October 2025).

When Is Nyepi Segara 2026?

  • Expected: Sunday 27 September 2026 (Redite Paing Ugu), the day after Purnama Kapat on Saturday 26 September 2026 according to kalenderbali.org.
  • How we worked it out: Nyepi Segara has consistently fallen the day after Purnama Kapat — 14 October 2019 (full moon 13 October), 11 October 2022 (10 October), 30 September 2023 (29 September) and 7 October 2025 (6 October).
  • Hours: in 2019 and 2025 it ran from 06:00 to 06:00 WITA the next day; the 2022 Klungkung transport office letter listed 00:01–01:00 WITA. As of 21 September 2026 we had not found an official 2026 announcement — confirm the exact hours with your boat operator.
  • The main ceremony rotates: Pura Penataran Ped in odd years, Pura Batu Medau (Desa Adat Suana) in even years, so 2026 is expected to centre on Batu Medau.

What Stops and What Keeps Running

  • Stops: all fast boats and ferries from Sanur, Kusamba and Padangbai to Nusa Penida; inter-island boats; snorkelling, diving and manta trips; seaweed farming and fishing. Skip swimming and beach play too.
  • Keeps running: life on land — hotels, restaurants, scooter rental and clifftop viewpoints generally stay open (Klungkung Regency's 2019 notice states that land activities remain permitted).
  • Meaning: the sea is left silent as an offering to Dewa Baruna; worshippers present banten pakelem offerings and ask for tirta amertha (holy water) from the sea (detikBali, 7 October 2025).
  • Don't confuse it with the Nyepi Segara of Desa Adat Kusamba on mainland Klungkung — a separate rite around Purnama Kelima (25 October 2026) that halts coastal activity from 06:00 to 18:00.

Tips for Rearranging Your Trip

  • Already on the islands? Make 27 September a land day: Pura Goa Giri Putri, or Kelingking enjoyed from the clifftop only. Add a night if your return falls on that day.
  • Cross on Saturday 26 or Monday 28 September. The day after Nyepi Segara 2025, Sanur harbour handled 84 boats and 7,685 passengers — arrive early.
  • Still want to dive? Mainland Bali waters (Padangbai, Amed, Tulamben) are not affected.
  • Have the Nusa Penida/Lembongan tourist levy ready: Rp25,000 per adult, Rp15,000 per child (in force since 1 September 2026).
  • If you watch a temple ceremony: wear a sarong and sash, cover your shoulders and never block a procession.

Practical Info & Booking
