Nasi Lawar Men Tingen, Sanur: Late-Night Warung Since the 1970s

A plate of mixed rice at Warung Nasi Lawar Men Tingen starts at about IDR 20,000 (around US$1.20, per Pawisik Bali, February 2025). The warung sits in the Pasar Intaran market area on Jalan Pejang Sari, Sanur Kauh, and opens from late afternoon until the small hours, which has made it one of the best-known late-night meals among Sanur locals.

It has been around a long time. IDN Times Bali and Pawisik Bali both record it trading since the 1970s. It once served turtle meat, which is now a protected species. From the 1980s that was dropped in favour of pork and chicken.

What to order

The star is lawar: a mix of vegetables, grated coconut and minced meat in Balinese spice paste. You choose pork lawar or chicken lawar. The plate usually comes with typical Balinese rice sides such as serapah and shredded meat floss, as Pawisik Bali describes.

  • Mixed rice with pork lawar: the warung's classic plate.
  • Mixed rice with chicken lawar: for those who don't eat pork, but see the halal note below.
  • Price: from about IDR 20,000 a plate according to the February 2025 source. Older reviews say IDR 15,000, so today's price may differ slightly. Bring cash.
  • Takeaway: possible, but lawar made with grated coconut and meat spoils fast in Bali's heat. Eat it within a few hours and don't leave it overnight in a hotel room without a fridge.
  • How to order: say "nasi lawar babi" (pork) or "nasi lawar ayam" (chicken) and the number of plates, then pay after eating or when your takeaway is handed over.

When to go, and the downsides

IDN Times Bali notes that it actually gets busier the later it gets. If you want the full spread of side dishes without a long queue, come earlier in the evening. Opening hours have never been officially published, only "late afternoon until the small hours" according to both outlets, so don't make it your only dinner plan on a holy day.

  • Not halal. The warung sells pork and has no recorded halal certification, the chicken lawar included.
  • Market setting. The warung is in the market and its parking area, not an air-conditioned restaurant. Good for a quick meal, less so for a relaxed dinner.
  • Spicy. Lawar and Balinese sambal are usually hot; ask for the sambal on the side if needed.
  • Another branch. A warung called "Men Tingen 2" on Jalan Hayam Wuruk, Denpasar, is listed on GoFood. This review is about the original at Pasar Intaran.

Men Tingen covers the hours Sanur's other legendary warungs don't: Men Weti usually sells out before noon, and Pasar Sindhu winds down towards 23:00. For a midnight hunger in Sanur, this is the most sensible option.
