Jalan Cok Rai Pudak in Peliatan is driven by almost everyone heading into Ubud from Gianyar or coming back from Tegallalang. On one side of that road, behind a stone gate and neat gardens, stands Museum Rudana & The Rudana Fine Art Gallery — a three-storey museum founded by collector Nyoman Rudana in the mid-1990s. The collection is of national calibre, yet the rooms are almost always empty.
Three Floors, Three Eras of Art
The main building is stacked so you can trace the journey of Balinese and Indonesian art as you climb.
- Ground floor: traditional paintings in the Kamasan, Batuan and Ubud styles, plus sculpture and ceremonial objects.
- Middle floor: modern Indonesian works.
- Top floor: contemporary pieces and temporary exhibitions.
Big Names on Quiet Walls
- Affandi and Basuki Abdullah represent Indonesia's modern masters.
- Antonio Blanco and Arie Smit stand for the foreign artists who made their work in Bali.
- Nyoman Gunarsa, I Gusti Nyoman Lempad and Made Wianta cover the Balinese side.
- The holdings are said to exceed 400 works — far more than one visit can absorb.
Rice Fields, Gardens and How to Enjoy It
- The rear grounds look out over gardens and rice fields; set aside time to simply sit there.
- Allow one to two hours so it is more than a drive-by.
- Arrive soon after opening for the best light and genuinely empty galleries.
- Dress modestly with covered shoulders; the Rudana Fine Art gallery next door is worth adding on.
