Budeng Mangrove Ecotourism lies about 5 km south of central Negara, on the road to Perancak Beach, so it is a 15-minute drive from town. The area has been run by the Wana Mertha forest farmers' group (KTH) since 2011: of Budeng village's roughly 89 hectares of mangrove, about 25 hectares are managed for ecotourism, a seedling nursery and mud crab farming between the trees (silvofishery).
What you actually get here
The heart of a visit is Warung Mangrove, opened in January 2021 and run by the village women's group. The menu comes from the estuary itself: mud crab in basa genep spice paste or sweet-and-sour sauce, nyatnyat clams, prawns and urap made from alor leaves. A 2022 detikBali report put a portion of Budeng crab at Rp58,000 (about US$3.50) including rice for two; that figure has almost certainly gone up, so ask the price per 100 g before ordering. The warung also sells mangrove products such as jeruju-leaf tea and mangrove chips.
Beyond eating, KTH Wana Mertha hosts educational visits: learning mangrove species, planting seedlings and a short walk through the mangrove. A 2026 community programme by Undhira and Udayana University (reported by NusaBali in August 2026) is training guides, drafting safety standards and fitting QR codes to seedlings so visitors who plant one can follow its growth.
Boats, canoes and tickets
As of our check in September 2026, we found no published official price for boat or canoe trips at Budeng. Boat routes have been mentioned in plans since 2021, but there is no rate we could verify. A fixed entry ticket is not announced either; what you definitely pay for is food and educational packages. If an estuary boat trip is your main goal, ask the warung or managers first and keep the Perancak estuary as a backup.
When to go: watch the tide
- At high tide the roots are submerged and the estuary looks full. This is the time to go if a boat is available.
- At low tide the mud is exposed, breathing roots and small crabs are easy to see, but the paths are muddier. Wear sport sandals, not canvas shoes.
- Time of day: late afternoon, around 15:00-17:00, is most comfortable, followed by dinner at the warung. Check the Perancak tide table on BMKG's maritime forecast site the day before.
Route and practical info
- Location: View on Google Maps. From Denpasar it is about 100 km along the Denpasar-Gilimanuk road; allow 2.5-3 hours depending on truck traffic in Tabanan.
- Booking: for groups or a mangrove-planting package, contact the managers through the warung's social media; search on Instagram. Opening hours are not officially published, so confirm before you go.
- Bring: mosquito repellent, a hat and water.
Not a good fit if you picture a long, tidy boardwalk like Tahura Ngurah Rai in Denpasar: facilities at Budeng are basic, mosquitoes are thick around dusk and there is little signage. For an overnight stay, Negara or the Medewi coast (about 30 minutes away) is most practical, and you can check hotel vouchers for that area on AccessiaPass before you set off. One last tip: come on a weekday, since at weekends the warung can go through more than 10 kg of crab and the kitchen queue gets long.
