Rock bands play almost every night at Gimme Shelter, a bar in Munggu village, Mengwi, and entry is free. It sits north-west of Canggu, roughly a 20-30 minute drive from Berawa depending on traffic, and opens daily from late afternoon until around 3am. Honeycombers lists it as opening at 5pm while its Google listing says 6pm; assume the bar comes alive after dark.
What happens each night
The setting is a farmhouse patio facing rice fields, with a small stage and a mini skate park out back. The band line-up rotates: punk, hardcore, classic rock, and local bands covering Green Day or Blink-182, according to visitor reviews. Monday is open-mic night, so bring a guitar if you want to get on stage. A few times a year there are touring bands and skate events, announced on Instagram. Google reviews also keep mentioning the bar cat, Danzig.
What it costs
There is no cover charge or minimum spend. RestaurantGuru estimates IDR 50,000-150,000 per person, and reviews repeatedly say beer is cheaper here than at Canggu bars. The kitchen serves Cajun food, and the jambalaya gets the most praise. Exact prices are not published online, so budget within that range (checked September 2026).
When to go
- Around sunset to see the rice fields before dark and get a seat near the stage.
- Wednesday, Friday, Saturday are most often named as the best band nights.
- Monday if you want to play at the open mic.
Honest verdict
If you like guitar music played live and a relaxed crowd that skews 30-plus, this is one of the bars with the most character around Canggu. If you want DJs, a dance floor or somewhere to dress up, skip it. It is also a trek from central Canggu, and Munggu's village roads are dark at night. Do not ride home on a scooter after drinking; book a ride-hailing car and wait in the car park. The arak that visitors often recommend is strong, so pace yourself.
