Desa Belega, Blahbatuh: Gianyar’s Bamboo Furniture Village That’s Still Going Strong

In Blahbatuh district, about a 30–40 minute drive southeast of Ubud, Desa Belega has long been known as the bamboo village. In its heyday (the 1980s to 2000) almost every household ran a bamboo craft business, with around 350 artisans. After the 2002 Bali bombing and the pandemic, their numbers fell sharply – but the workshops that survived now take orders from hotels, villas, cities outside Bali, and even Italy and Japan.

What’s Made in Belega

  • Furniture: chair-and-table sets, beds, wardrobes, dressing tables, bar tables, even baby swings – much of it made to order.
  • Bamboo structures: gazebos, bale-bale daybeds, angkul-angkul gate roofs, and complete bamboo villa units.
  • Materials: tali, petung, and cendani bamboo, mostly brought in from Bangli; larger workshops boil the bamboo for up to 24 hours and use eco-friendly preservatives for durability.

Belega artisans were also entrusted with bamboo structures for a G20 delegation banquet in Bali – proof that the village’s skills are still in demand.

How to Visit & Shop

  • Workshops and displays are spread along Jalan Raya Belega and the lanes of banjar such as Banjar Kebon Kaja. These are production workshops, not souvenir shops – come during working hours and ask before taking photos.
  • Price benchmarks from local media coverage: a simple bed from around Rp600,000, a chair-and-table set around Rp1.2–1.4 million (2019–2021), gazebos from around Rp15 million, and a 4x6-metre bamboo villa around Rp200 million (2026). Current prices may differ.
  • Polite bargaining is normal, especially for several pieces. Ask about the bamboo type and the preservation process, as they determine lifespan.
  • Large items can be shipped: some workshops regularly serve buyers outside Bali and export, so ask about packing and cargo options.
  • Combine your visit with neighbouring Desa Bona (lontar palm-leaf weaving) or Pura Gaduh in Blahbatuh.
