Compound Warung Ubud: The Family Kitchen Hidden 30 Metres Down a Gootama Lane

On Jalan Gootama, the pedestrian lane linking Jalan Dewi Sita and Jalan Hanoman, almost every eatery hangs a big sign. Compound Warung does not. Its entrance is just a small, unadorned yard at Jl. Gootama No. 6, and you have to walk about 30 metres to the back before you find the family kitchen that has become one of Ubud's best-loved places to eat.

What to Order

The menu is short and honest: everyday dishes cooked in a home kitchen and served inside a family compound that is still lived in.

  • Nasi campur with a vegetarian, chicken or pork option, from around Rp35,000 and served with several side dishes.
  • Fried chicken cooked until the skin is crisp, which regulars cite as the reason they come back.
  • Gado-gado, satay and soto ayam for lighter choices.
  • Corn fritters and es daluman, a green grass jelly drink, for a hot afternoon.
  • Traditional desserts: klepon, dadar gulung and es campur.

The kitchen states that it uses no artificial colouring, preservatives or flavour enhancers.

Prices & Opening Hours

  • Open 11am–10pm daily.
  • Expect to spend Rp30,000–50,000 per person for a main plus a drink, one of the most reasonable bills in central Ubud.
  • Portions are generous; two people usually eat well for under Rp150,000.
  • Carry enough cash, and ask first if you want to pay by card.

Queueing & Booking Tips

  • 7pm to 9pm is the busiest stretch and seating inside the compound is limited, so book a table by WhatsApp if you are coming for dinner.
  • Lunch is far calmer and you can usually walk straight in.
  • Gootama is pedestrian-friendly: park near Jl. Hanoman or Monkey Forest and walk three to five minutes.
  • Do not look for a bold sign; simply step into the yard at number 6 and keep walking to the back.
