Bhineka Djaja: Bali's Oldest Coffee Shop, Open Since 1935

Among the old shophouses of Denpasar's Chinatown on Jalan Gajah Mada, one narrow doorway has been leaking the smell of roasting coffee since morning. That is Kedai Kopi Bhineka Djaja, open since 1935 and run by three generations of the Tjahjadi family. It is widely called the oldest coffee shop still operating in Bali, and tourists almost always walk straight past it.

Why this shop matters

  • Real history: trading since 1935 and a pioneer of commercial Bali coffee.
  • Their own roast: they produce the ground coffee brand Kopi Bali Cap Kupu-Kupu Bola Dunia, so what is in your glass comes from their own roastery.
  • An honest old building: a heritage shophouse with wooden shelves, coffee tins and plain tables. No air conditioning, no WiFi, barely a power socket.
  • Perfect position: on the left side of the road just past Pasar Badung, easy to pair with Pasar Kumbasari across the river.

What to order

  • Kopi tubruk — ground coffee brewed straight in the glass, thick and unfiltered. The most honest cup here, from around Rp10,000.
  • Bali kopi susu — sweet Balinese coffee with milk, around Rp20,000; the iced version around Rp26,000.
  • Espresso, cappuccino, latte and piccolo are also available if you want a modern brew.
  • Jajan pasar, traditional market snacks to go with the coffee, Rp3,000–Rp30,000.
  • Ground coffee to take home — small packs around Rp8,000–Rp15,000, kilo packs roughly Rp52,000–Rp110,000 per kg depending on grade.

Tips before you go

  • Come early, around 9–11am, when the roasting smell is strongest and the room is still quiet.
  • Closed on Sundays. Do not get the day wrong.
  • A scooter is far easier. With a car, park on Jl. Kartini or in the nearby Pasar Badung area, and bring small cash notes.
  • Do it all in one morning: Jalan Gajah Mada, Pasar Badung, then Pasar Kumbasari.

Denpasar's old town is best explored in the morning, which is far easier when you are staying nearby. AccessiaPass hotel vouchers help bring down room costs in Denpasar and around it, so more of your budget can go to the small things that end up being the most memorable, like a ten-thousand-rupiah glass of kopi tubruk in a shop that has been brewing since 1935.
