Bali in October 2026: Transition-Season Weather, Ceremony Calendar, Ubud Writers Festival & Hotel Savings

October is Bali’s transition month: the dry season is winding down, the wet season hasn’t fully arrived, and the July–August peak crowds are gone. For many travellers it is a sweet spot — mostly sunny days, friendlier hotel rates and a packed cultural calendar. This is a guide specifically for October 2026, not another generic “best time to visit Bali” piece.

October Weather: From Dry Season to First Rains

  • Temperature: around 30–33°C by day on the coast (Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran); cooler, roughly 22–28°C, in Ubud, and colder still in Munduk or Kintamani.
  • Rain: the start of the month is usually dry. Towards the third and fourth weeks, short afternoon or evening showers become more frequent — typically 1–2 hour downpours, not all-day rain.
  • Rising humidity: it feels muggier, and morning mist on the Mount Batur sunrise trail is more likely, so have a backup plan.
  • Scheduling tip: put outdoor activities (beach, trekking, snorkelling) in the morning and keep afternoons for spas, cafés or museums.

Crowds & Hotel Prices

  • Shoulder season: once the European summer holidays and Australian school holidays (usually ending in early October) are over, occupancy drops and hotel rates tend to be lower than in July–August.
  • No public holidays: October 2026 has no Indonesian national holidays, so domestic crowds only build up at weekends.
  • The Ubud exception: during the festival on 21–25 October, rooms in central Ubud fill fast — book well ahead.

October 2026 Events & Ceremonies

  • Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, 21–25 October 2026 — the 23rd edition, themed “Samarasā: Awareness. Empathy. Action.”, with 100+ sessions and 150+ writers, journalists and thinkers. Venues are spread across Ubud (Indus, Casa Luna and more); 1-day and 4-day passes are sold on the official website. View on Google Maps
  • Tumpek Wayang, Saturday 10 October — a holy day for the art of wayang; some villages hold ceremonies and shadow-puppet performances.
  • Full moon (Purnama), Sunday 25 October — temples are busy with full-moon prayers. Visitors must wear a sarong and sash and never block worshippers.
  • Saraswati Day, Saturday 31 October — the day knowledge descended to earth; students pray at schools and temples in traditional dress. The next morning, Banyu Pinaruh (1 November), locals purify themselves at beaches and springs from dawn, followed by Pagerwesi (4 November).

Best Areas to Stay in October

  • Ubud: a must if you attend the festival; the first rains turn the rice fields green again.
  • Sanur & Nusa Dua: calm beaches, family-friendly, close to the airport — easy when an afternoon shower hits.
  • Uluwatu & Jimbaran: sunsets are still strong in the first half of the month.
  • Munduk & Sidemen: cool, quiet and cheaper villas; bring a jacket.

October Packing List

  • A foldable raincoat or small umbrella, plus non-slip sandals
  • Sunscreen and a hat — middays are still hot
  • Sarong and sash for temple visits (Purnama, Saraswati)
  • Mosquito repellent — mosquitoes increase as the rains begin
  • A light jacket for Batur sunrise or evenings in Munduk
  • A waterproof pouch for your phone and wallet
