If you only have one morning in Kemenuh, Sukawati: pick Tegenungan for a big waterfall with full facilities, pick Uma Anyar for a small, quiet pool and a cheaper ticket. Both are in Kemenuh village, Gianyar, about a 20-minute drive from central Ubud, and both are fed by the Petanu River.
Quick numbers (checked October 2026)
- Uma Anyar: Rp20,000 per person, open 08:00-18:00 (IDN Times, August 2026). Another source lists Rp15,000 including parking and a 17:00 close, so carry spare cash and don't arrive too late.
- Tegenungan: Rp30,000, open 06:30-18:30 (IDN Times, August 2026).
- Height: Uma Anyar is about 10-15 metres in two tiers, like stepped rice fields. Tegenungan is about 15 metres with a much wider curtain of water.
- Walk: Uma Anyar is a 7-10 minute descent on a footpath with uneven steps. Tegenungan has a long concrete staircase that you will feel on the way back up.
Uma Anyar: for a swim without a photo queue
Uma Anyar opened to the public around 2020 and is still run simply. There are toilets, changing rooms, bamboo huts and statues by local carvers that people use for photos. At the base is a shallow natural pool; on dry days you can swim. There is also a spring used for melukat purification: wear a sarong and sash, and women who are menstruating may not enter that area.
The downsides are clear. There are no food stalls on site, so bring water and snacks. Parking is free but tight, and a 2024 university community-service study noted that parking and changing facilities are still inadequate. After rain the current gets strong and the water turns murky, so forget swimming. It is small; don't drive all the way from Uluwatu just for this one.
Tegenungan: for first-timers and groups
Tegenungan has what Uma Anyar lacks: big car park, toilets, a row of warung and far more water. The price is crowds. Tour groups start arriving toward midday, so the first hour after opening is the calmest. The current in the lower pool can be strong and staff sometimes stop people going close, so follow their lead. More detail in our Tegenungan Waterfall review.
So which one?
- Pick Uma Anyar if you're solo or a couple, want a quiet dip and don't mind packing food. Visitor reviews say only a handful of people are there around 14:30-16:00.
- Pick Tegenungan if it's your first Bali waterfall, you have kids who need toilets and food nearby, or you want photos of a wide curtain of water. Arrive before 08:00.
- Both in one morning? Yes. Tegenungan first while it's quiet, then Uma Anyar toward midday. Sumampan Waterfall, about 1 km from Uma Anyar, can be a third stop; see our Sumampan Waterfall notes.
Our verdict: if you're staying in Ubud and have already seen Tegenungan, Uma Anyar is the better use of your time. For a first visit, Tegenungan is still the safer pick because of its facilities.
